Early Beginnings in Kalinga



In indigenous communities, children are taught early on to take on the craft of the community. In Kalinga, for example, they start with beadwork and warping as early as 7. This trains them to have dexterity, concentration and an eye for color and texture. Even the way a pattern is woven can determine the softness of the cloth.

In terms of values, what they are being taught is discipline, organization, patience and camaraderie. They often do beadwork as a team , chatting as they complete the task at hand and eating together when they take a break.
